In the newer games in the series, there is a simple animation that plays when using an item during battle directly on an active battler. However, since Essentials is based around the Gen 3 games, it doesn't naturally include an animation like this.

This plugin introduces a new animation to address this; allowing items used on battlers to show a simple animation to indicate an item is being used. Here's an example of what this looks like:

You'll notice that the battle text describing item usage has also been updated so that it will now be more specific about which Pokemon the trainer is using the item on. This is also true for items used on party Pokemon and not active battlers.

It's also worth noting that while items used in battle that are used on a Pokemon in the party will not show any animation, there will now be a sound effect that plays to indicate an item is being used. Items used in battle that don't target any particular battler or Pokemon, such as the Guard Spec. or the Poke Flute, will neither play an animation or a sound effect.
