This plugin builds upon the Deluxe Battle Kit to implement animated trainer intros for all trainers who had them that appeared in Pokemon Heart Gold & Soul Silver, Pokemon Platinum, Pokemon Black & White, and their sequels. This isn't merely a sprite pack however, as it implements a variety of features and that utilize several functions of the Deluxe Battle Kit and other supported plugins. This plugin builds off of the code that is used to animate Pokemon sprites in the Animated Pokemon System plugin, which itself was built off of EBDX by Luka S.J.

In addition to providing the actual sprites for every trainer with animated intros, this plugin also provides all trainer mugshots that were used across all of the games within generations 4 and 5. Below, I'll list all of the sprites that are added or replaced by this plugin.

Trainer Front Sprites

All trainer sprites included in Essentials by default are from Gen 3 - specifically FRLG, which are smaller in size compared to the trainers in the Gen 4 & 5 games. This makes them visually inconsistent with the trainer sprites from later gens. To resolve this, I included replacement sprites for ALL of the default trainer classes found in Essentials.

The replaced sprites roughly fit into three categories:

  • An animated sprite strip for that trainer class found in either Gen 4 or 5.

  • If no animated sprite for that trainer class exists, a single-frame sprite from Gen 4 or 5 is included instead.

  • If the trainer class doesn't have an animated OR a single-frame sprite found in either Gen 4 or 5, then a resized version of the same exact FRLG sprite is included.

Some trainer classes got renamed between generations (for instance, "Cool Trainers" became "Ace Trainers"), so in those cases I just kept the Gen 3 class names while giving them the newer-gen sprites. Other trainer classes simply never returned in the series after Gen 3, so they have no equivalents in later gens. In these rare cases, these sprites are simply replaced with classes that are somewhat related. For instance, the sprite used for the "Engineer" class is replaced with the sprite used in HGSS for the "Worker" class, which looks similar.

In some cases, there simply are no sprites from the Gen 4 or 5 games that can be used to replace the Gen 3 trainer sprites. This is mostly true for player characters, such as Brendan, May, and Leaf, or specific characters, such as Agatha. In these cases, the same sprite that Essentials uses by default is kept, since there is no alternative. However, these sprites are still resized to be compatible with this plugin out of the box. Keep in mind that they won't look consistent next to the newer sprites.

In addition to all of the replaced sprites, this plugin also includes many new sprites for trainer classes not found in Essentials by default. Here are all of the new trainer classes and sprites added by this plugin:

Trainer Back Sprites

None of the trainer back sprites included in Essentials by default are replaced by this plugin. However, this plugin does ADD many new trainer back sprites, pulling from various games. All trainer back sprites that have appeared in the series from Gen 3-5 are included in this plugin.

Note, however, that the size of trainer back sprites are not consistent between generations. The size and dimensions of these sprites are all different between Gens 3, 4, and 5. Because of this, I had to manually cut and resize all of these sprites to try and "fit" the ball throwing animation as best as possible. However, I did include folders containing all of the unedited Gen 4 and 5 back sprites, if you wish you use them for whatever reason.

Below is a list of every new trainer back sprite added by this plugin.
